Con tan solo dos sencillos lanzados, The Quietus calificó en 2019 a Black Country, New Road como «la mejor banda del mundo entero», así de grande fue la afirmación. Al poco tiempo después, sus singles se habían vendido por más de £100 -alrededor de casi $3000MXN- y posteriormente lograron estar firmados para presentarse en prestigiosos festivales de 2020 como el Primavera Sound, Glastonbury y SXSW.
Con todas estas señales era por seguro que estábamos ante un verdadero hit, este tipo de presión es la que suele por romper a las bandas mucho antes de debutar como deben, el hype es un asesino mortal y en ocasiones esos ascensos repentinos terminan acribillándolos después de entregar un álbum debut sin chiste que no logran cumplir las expectativas de todos, pero, afortunadamente para Black Country, New Road este no fue el caso, aprovecharon esa misma presión y crearon lo que la gran mayoría de la prensa y el mundo entero considera una obra maestra: For The First Time (2021) ¡Y vaya, que sí es una obra maestra! Hasta es nuestro álbum favorito del año.

El sonido en For The First Time (2021) podría describirse como la fusión de paisajes sonoros post-rock con post-punk agregándole jazz, y aun así la misma naturaleza de la banda hace que sea difícil localizar o descifrar el género exacto. Es una licuadora caótica que te atrapa y no te suelta en ningún momento.
Aunque la mayoría de la música del disco es en gran parte instrumental, cuando hay letras interpretadas por un jovencísimo Issac Wood estas pasan a primer plano centrando toda la atención drásticamente en la guitarra y su voz, la cual tiene notorias referencias a Scott Walker -vamos, hasta el mismo lo menciona en ‘Sunglasses‘- pero no sólo, sino también abundan referencias contemporáneas sonoras a grupos cómo Squid, Black Midi, Fat White Family y Jerskin Fendrix, pero paralelamente lograr alejarse para crear una originalidad en conjunto con la música y el sonido cacofónico orquestado.
For The First Time (2021) es un disco intenso perfectamente elaborado que demuestra que aún hay mucha tela de donde cortar en cuanto a sonidos y propuestas, quizás su único defecto es que es muy corto, ya que tan solo dura cuarenta minutos pero que son suficientes para volarte la cabeza unas cinco veces seguida.
En conclusión, Black Country, New Road no son solo chicos ansiosos de 22 años haciendo música para otros chicos ansiosos también de 22 años; son un reflejo crudo de la sociedad en la que nos hemos convertido y la sociedad en la que nos estamos convirtiendo. Si la honestidad y el virtuosismo de este septeto continúan para su segunda placa, Ants from Up There (2022), qué será lanzada en febrero del 2022, podríamos estar presenciando el surgimiento de una banda que definirá a una generación entera. Esperamos no equivocarnos.
