Hyperpop: El pop del futuro

El impacto de internet y la cultura que se creó a partir de este mundo es un tema realmente extenso, una subcultura que ha desarrollado sus propias maneras de expresión visual y sonora. Justamente de acá es de donde surge la estética aesthetic, la esencia más pura del glitchcore, entre muchas otras más hebras.

Sin embargo, y no ajeno al mundo real, hay un pequeño grupo de artistas que están experimentando con el sonido convencional del pop creando así lo que muchos ya están acuñando el futuro del pop: Hyperpop.

El hyperpop es el resultado de los elementos convencionales del pop mainstream combinados con una producción y edición excesiva, creando así un abanico de posibilidades para el mismo género.

Antecedentes. 2010 – 2012

Para comprender la importancia actual del sonido hyperpop debemos irnos unos años hacia atrás, más específicamente a inicios de la década de 2010, donde personalidades como Grimes y Sky Ferreira ya daban los primeros avistamientos de este nuevo género; por su parte, Grimes lanzaba Geidi Primes (2010) y Oblivion (2012), dos álbumes que bien podrían entrar en el dream-pop por sus temáticas atmosféricas en todo el material, y a su vez, Ferreira con Ghost (2012) decantaba más hacia el lado noise rock pero con ciertos sonidos sintéticos. La similitud de ambas artistas decae en la experimentación con diversos elementos que componen al pop, llegando al synth-pop y hasta art-pop.

El sonido que ya estaban empleando y popularizando -dentro de su apretado nicho- los respectivos trabajos de Grimes y Ferreira iban amoldando el terreno de lo que sería después considerado como un pop menos accesible, pero a su vez más interesante en cuanto a ejecución. Grimes, por ejemplo, emplea texturas electrónicas, no en las instrumentales, si no en las voces de las canciones para comenzar a mutar las melodías pop convencionales.

Es acá donde entra a escena la más destacable activista del género: una chica inglesa bajo el pseudónimo de Charli XCX que venía trabajando en un concepto similar al de las dos artistas mencionadas párrafos más arriba. Las influencias de Charli fueron aún más definidas por la excesiva presencia del new wave en toda Europa, además de la creciente tendencia por el house. Para 2012, la inglesa ya contaba con un mixtape, Super Ultra (2012) que rápidamente se posicionó dentro de las listas de éxito de la isla, ganándose además un espacio dentro de la cultura rave.

El surgimiento de los pioneros. 2013 – 2015

El éxito de Charli se vió debido a su firme propósito de crear dance y electrónica que todavía suene al más convencional pop, para posteriormente presentarlo ante un público convencional, dejando de lado su público de nicho para adentrarse dentro del mainstream comercial.

Seguramente hayas escuchado de Charli XCX desde hace varios años, y es normal, pues ha estado presente en el mainstream global sin perder su esencia. En 2014 colaboró con Iggy Azalea en el éxito Fancy, una colaboración de alto calibre que le dio una proyección mundial, además de su álbum debut True Romance (2013) que ya había recibido muy buenas críticas de los expertos, pero la audiencia general tenía su vista más fija en los éxitos comerciales que en su disco.

Pronto Charli XCX se vio envuelta en un dilema: podría seguir haciendo pop convencional de alto estándar o arriesgarse, experimentar y profundizar en la línea que ya iba trabajando. Su decisión cambiaría por completo la forma de hacer y consumir pop. Luego de lanzar Sucker (2015) y ser Boom Clap el tema principal de The Fault in our Stars, la fama de Charli fue rápidamente a su punto más alto, y claro que no iba a desaprovechar esta oportunidad. La visibilidad ya la tenía, y es en este punto donde comienza a popularizar los sonidos experimentales del hyperpop.

Por otra parte, A.G. Cook, importante personaje para esta historia, funda PC Music, un sello independiente que busca moldear personajes pop poco convencionales en cuanto a sonido e imagen. Después de varios lanzamientos, parecía que el sonido que buscaba Cook con PC Music comenzaba a aparecer, exagerando los clichés de la música dance y pop al punto de la parodia, con instrumentales vibrantes y sintetizadores evidentes en la voz.

El sonido ya estaba establecido: Las influencias claras, además del pop convencional, van desde el j-pop hasta la música de videojuegos; este estilo se conoce ya como bubblegum bass, un sonido que puede resultar tan raro en sí mismo que llega a ser muy accesible para el público en general.

Los medios de comunicación comenzaron a denominar a este nuevo movimiento como el pop del futuro.

El pináculo del género. 2016 – 2018

En una entrevista, Charli XCX comentó: «mi deseo es cambiar la manera de ver y hacer el pop mainstream«, y con Vroom Vroom (2016) mostraba su esfuerzo y los frutos que éste le habían dado. Un EP influenciado mayormente por un hip-hop industrial pero sin perder la esencia hyperpop. Este EP completamente producido bajo el brazo de PC Music mostraba todo el pasado pop mainstream que Charli había dejado atrás para enfocarse en una nueva faceta del movimiento hyperpop.

«Desde 2016, dejé de lanzar canciones que no me agradaban. Me gusta trabajar con personas que no tienen estas reglas preconcebidas sobre cómo se supone que deben sonar las cosas«, mencionó la inglesa. La experimentación de personajes como Charli nos trajo una nueva mirada a algo que creíamos ya insípido y monótono como el pop.

En 2017 se consiguió lo que muchos seguidores del género consideran el punto más alto que se podía llegar con el hyperpop y todos los experimentos sonoros que se habían hecho hasta ese momento. ¿Cuál es este punto? Pop 2 (2017) de Charli XCX. El álbum, como lo sugiere el título, es la obra maestra del pop trascendental con melodías enormemente futuristas y una subversión misma del género, por lo que Pop 2 es sin problema alguno el disco más influyente e importante para el desarrollo y crecimiento exponencial del hyperpop.

El ecosistema y las nuevas caras del Hyperpop. 2018 – 2021

A partir de Pop 2 (2017), Charli se dio cuenta que había creado un ecosistema, uno donde ella y sus materiales lanzados desde 2017 en adelante eran el núcleo de toda una comunidad de músicos cada vez más creciente que seguían sus pasos y experimentaban con éstos, añadiéndoles sus insignias personales, llegando a nuevos horizontes dentro del género.

Una de las caras más notorias del género actualmente es Dorian Electra, una nueva estrella pop que lleva consigo una estética que va desde la arquitectura medieval hasta ciertas ramas de la filosofía. Los rasgos teatrales que abundan en cada una de sus canciones y videoclips hacen de Dorian una propuesta única en el género y en la música en general, además de una necesidad por mostrar la representación rechazada por la corriente principal de artistas pop, tocando tópicos interesantísimos en pro de la comunidad queer y el resto de la cultura LGBT+. Su ideología y sonido reflejan la naturaleza desafiante y contestataria que este nuevo pop trae consigo, donde no hay límite para la expresión.

Podemos mencionar también a Rina Sawayama, una artista japonesa británica que refleja más a la perfección la mezcla de estos sonidos nuevos del hyperpop con el estilo del pop de los 90’s y 2000’s. Apenas el año pasado lanzó SAWAYAMA (2020), que fue rotundamente aclamado por la crítica y los medios especializados.

Otra cara del nuevo pop es la que nos presenta el dúo 100 gecs, un estilo más enfocado al noise y glitch-pop, pero con las enseñanzas que les ha dejado el hyperpop.

¿Es el hyperpop el futuro del pop?

El hyperpop está actualmente presente, y afortunadamente dentro del mainstream, donde está al alcance de cada oyente convencional de pop. Pero planteando la pregunta del título de este apartado, ¿es el hyperpop el futuro del pop? Creemos que sí, y más que el futuro, es el presente del pop, un pop que en su momento necesitaba un cambio necesario para no quedar obsoleto ante los nuevos sonidos que ya se iban creando a la par.

El hyperpop representó un avance en la vanguardia musical del pop convencional, llevando a este último a nuevos horizontes cada vez más experimentales. El nuevo pop presentó una evolución necesaria no solo en lo sonoro, si no también en la estética de los artistas.

Esta reflexión abre la puerta a preguntarnos si es necesaria una evolución en demás géneros musicales, esto para mantener la esencia real de lo que implica el género y no perder autenticidad, además de atraer más y nuevo público para no estancarse en el sonido predilecto del género. Bien dicen que los cambios son buenos y necesarios, y el hyperpop es el vivo recordatorio de que es así.
